World’s fastest electric motorcycle

Mission One

Today at the exclusive TED conference, where Bill Gates, Pierre Omidyar and the Google twins go every year to wonder at how smart they and their friends all are, Mission Motor Company debuted the exceptionally-beautiful Mission One, a 150mph electric motorcycle that has a range of 150 miles. Yes, this is the Tesla of motorcycles, with an equally for-the-rich-only price tag of $68,995 for the first 50, limited-edition models coming to the market in 2010.

The bike has only one speed and is propelled by a lithium-ion battery, just like the Tesla. In fact, Founder and CEO Forrest North used to be a battery engineer at Tesla. The spectacular design is the work of superstar industrial designer Yves Behar of fuseproject. Would we sell our soul to own one? Is the Pope Catholic?

So they praise this thing for being silent? Isn't part of the fun of a motorbike that it's loud? And if it isn't loud enough, you can spend a bit of your hard-earned cash on some new "silencers" where the only thing obstructing the gas flow is the exhaust valve. Top speed. 150mph. If you tell your mates (presuming they are of the superbike- and not Harley-riding kind) that your new bike does 150mph they will die. Laughing. And it has a range of 150 miles, has it now? At what speed? 20mph? I'm sorry. I really don't want one of these.

Big E, the question of sound or no sound is a whole philosophical question in and by itself. As far as new engineering goes, this is not a bad effort. But you know where I stand on the question of silent locomotion: right next to Nick Mason's BRM V16.
