The most beautiful car of all time

Citroën DS

Let the arguing begin: a panel of legendary car designers assembled by Classic & Sports Car magazine has voted the 1955 Citroën DS the most beautiful car of all time. And when we say “legendary car designers”, we mean Leonardo Fioravanti, Marcello Gandini, Giorgetto Giugiaro, and Gordon Murray among others. These men themselves are responsible for a selection of the most achingly-desirable cars in history.

“The Citroën is a benchmark design, but we were still astonished that it came out on top when you look at the sexiness – and values – of some of its rivals,” said James Elliott, editor of Classic & Sports Car.

Although it may now be regarded as the ultimate romantic lover’s ride, the “Goddess”, designed by Italian sculptor Flaminio Bertoni, represented a quantum leap in automotive technology. Unlike other cars of the day, the DS applied hydraulics to not just the brakes, but also to the clutch and transmission. However, the most notable innovation was the still-impressive hydropneumatic, self-levelling suspension.

Below is the list of the Top 10 most beautiful cars as voted by the esteemed jury.
