Official pictures of BMW’s first PAS

BMW 5-Series GT

BMW has released details of the BMW Concept 5-Series Gran Tourismo, a car it says creates a whole new category as a “Progressive Activity Sedan’, which means that they probably hate us for calling it a station wagon. By now, we are used to BMW’s nomenclature of this sort, recalling “Sports Activity Vehicle” or SAV instead of SUV when the X5 was released. Although the car in the pictures is dubbed a “concept”, it is apparently production-ready, minus that show-car coat of paint.

The GT will hit the market this fall and will be officially launched in Geneva in March. One has to wonder, does the world need a BMW PAS? BMW claims that a segment of its ageing customers wants a car that is not as overtly sporty as the 5-Series, but also not as imposing as the X6.

It does have some interesting features, like the split tailgate that allows for loading without opening the entire hatch. The GT will no doubt drive as well as a BMW should, but we really do wonder whether it will sell well. Then again, the Porsche Cayenne sold out despite the furor from Porsche purists, so this could end up being a masterstroke sales move by BMW.

Tell us below what you think of this latest product move by BMW.

OMG! I love the M5 estate ... maybe it'll get a makeover like this in its next iteration? I want one!
