VIDEO: BMW readies its X1 crossover

These are the latest official teaser and spy pictures of the BMW X1, accompanied by a video of a prototype undergoing testing in Mallorca, Spain. This new, all-wheel-drive crossover vehicle, to be unveiled at the Frankfurt Auto Show in September, is based on the 1-Series platform and is designed to fit in below the BMW X3. The X1 is similar in size to the X3 but rides significantly lower. The next generation X3 will, in turn, grow larger in order to leave a bigger gap between itself and the X1

In Europe, the X1 will come to the market in the following guises:

xDrive18i
xDrive18d
xDrive20d
xDrive23d
xDrive28i

We in the US will likely only get the xDrive28i, unless BMW decides to finally import its small and efficient diesel engines into this market.
