Audi preparing hardcore R8

Not content with winning over the hearts of swooning car fans and auto journalists alike with even its 'base' V8 model R8, Audi has been caught testing a hardcore, lightweight track-oriented version of its R8 V10 at the Nürburgring, where all great cars are born. Although it is too early to say, this new R8 will likely carry the "Clubsport" moniker. Visual clues of its special mission are the fixed wing a la the TT RS, spoiler blades up front as well as the heavy-duty diffuser out back. Old-school racing hood latches complete the track-biased effect.

Audi, who owns Lamborghini, will likely keep this racy version of the R8's power well below that of its corporate sibling, the Gallardo. However, expect a power boost from the 525 hp, 5.2L V10 to go along with major weight savings. As with most Clubsport cars, the R8 Clubsport will likely feature light, carbon fiber bucket seats, bigger brakes, lighter glass, carbon-fiber body panels and may even lose its A/C unit and radio. Of course, we will bring you the details when we have them.
