All-new 2010 Audi S4 bows in

After a brief departure from Audi's showrooms, the Audi S4 is back in the US and it's all new. Starting at $45,900, the 2010 S4 is significantly different from its predecessor in one major way: it eschews the naturally aspirated, 340 hp 4.2L V8 in favor of a supercharged, 3.0L, direct-injected V6 producing 333 hp and 325 lb-ft of torque. However, even though ever-more stringent emissions laws have prompted Audi to downsize the engine and take on forced-induction, you can rest assured that the end result is a faster S4. How much faster? How about a 0-60 time of 4.9 seconds, which is 0.4 seconds faster than the outgoing V8 model?!

Fuel efficiency is also up at 18 mpg city/27 highway, compared to the previous model's 13 mpg city/20 highway. These superior consumption figures, along with the mentioned power figures, put the 2010 S4 well ahead of its main rivals, the Mercedes-Benz C350 and the BMW 335i. The Benz starts at $39,000 but offers only 268 hp from its 3.5L V6. The BMW does much better with 300 hp from its $40,300, twin-turbo, inline-6 335i.

"What, the S4 competes with the 335i and not the M3?" That is right, Audi cheekily pits the S4 against the top end of BMW's 'regular' 3-Series while it one-ups BMW with an RS4 to fight with the M3. We cannot wait to see what the new RS4 will be like.
