Audi goes electric with the R8 e-Tron

We recently reported on a new, viral Audi site dedicated to the company's focus on electric cars. As hinted on the site, electricityuntamed.com, Audi had been planning something big for the Frankfurt Auto Show, and here it is: the Audi R8 e-Tron concept car.

This fully-electric R8 concept packs an equivalent of 313 hp and a transmission-destroying 3,319 lb-ft of torque! This mighty amount of shove comes courtesy of four electric motors powered by a Li-ion battery pack. While 0-62 mph comes at a brisk 4.8 seconds, it is the 4.1 second dash from 37 to 75 mph that demonstrates the effect of all that torque.

The e-Tron's battery pack has a capacity of 53 kWh, 42.4 kWh of which is used by the powertrain. The battery pack makes up 1,036 lbs. of the car's overall weight of 3,527 lbs. In order to stay true to its quattro heritage, Audi has fitted the e-Tron with two electric motors per axle. The e-Tron has a range of 154 miles on the EU combined driving scale.

The e-Tron is just a concept, but it kicks off Audi's electric intentions with a bang. Watch for the technologies showcased in the e-Tron to trickle down to Audi's lineup over the coming years.
