VW working on larger E-Up for the US market

Volkswagen plans to introduce a production version of its lauded E-Up electric city car in Europe next year and as per reports, it is now working on a larger version of the car for the US market.

The European version, weighing in at a relatively light 2400 lbs., features 18kW batteries that provide an adequate-for-cities 80-mile range. Solar panels installed on the roof and even behind the visors provide supplementary power for the car's batteries. Full charging of the batteries takes five hours.

While the E-Up is suitably sized for the European market, it is considered too small for us Americans. Our market is too important for VW, however, and even seems to be driving the development of an electric VW. "The reason we are working on an electric vehicle is the American market," says VW's product development chief Ulrich Hackenberg.
