BMW to resurrect the M1 as a green supercar

You didn't think BMW would build the outlandish Vision EfficientDymanics for nothing, did you?! If not, you were right: AutoExpress reports that BMW will resurrect the M1 moniker with a high-tech sports car based on the Vision concept. As expected, the M1 will feature the Vision's 1.5L three-cylinder diesel engine, paired with an electric motor. The hybrid powertrain will produce 350 hp and 590 lb-ft. of torque.

The M1 will reach 60 mph in less than five seconds and as with other BMWs, its top speed will be limited to 155 mph. The car will achieve these figures in the most fuel-efficient of ways by employing BMW's Air Curtain system. This technology reduces wheel-arch drag losses by channeling air through the front bumper and out ahead of the front wheels. The body's complex shape will help give this BMW an incredibly low drag coefficient of 0.22 Cd.

A BMW insider told AutoExpress, “This is one of the most exciting projects BMW has ever delivered. The engine is virtually production ready, while part of the hybrid system will debut in the new petrol-electric X6 Hybrid. Our DCT gearbox [dual clutch transmission] – already available in the M3 – offers quick shifts, and the new car’s chassis is a piece of art. Crucially, it’s ready for the road.”

BMW is targeting Audi's R8 with the M1, albeit with a completely different philosophy. The technology showcased in the M1 will permeate the rest of BMW's model lineup.
