VIDEO: Audi S4 out-BMWs the BMW 335i

This teutonic battle is as close as it can get: two 3.0L, force induction-propelled German sports sedans battling for the title of class benchmark. For years, that benchmark has been the BMW 3-Series, a car that wins critics' hearts through its perfect balance of all the elements necessary to make a sporty, practical every day car.

Enjoying the lofty position atop the list of sports sedans has its dangers: it inspires rivals to mark you as the bulls eye as they try and better you. Audi in particular has seemingly made a laser-like focus on BMW its raison-d'etre. While in the past, Audi cars have usually seemed to fall short of equalling their BMW counterparts in performance analyses, the launch of the R8 was a warning shot by Audi that its sporting ambitions were not to be taken lightly. The Ingolstadt marque's efforts have paid off, as Audi is considered the hottest German brand in the US by marketers.

With the 2010 Audi S4, Audi has taken direct aim at the aging BMW 335i. According to Edmunds' InsideLine, Audi has succeeded! Having recently driven the new S4, I can attest that Audi does indeed have a winner on its hands: a great engine note, lithe handling, lightning-fast transmission (note: I drove a dual clutch example), and that great Audi interior fit and finish.
