VIDEO: BMW builds 120 mpg Simple concept

Well, you know it's a concept, so the bizarre shape only a mother could love should not be a surprise. However, this concept is significant in that BMW has undertaken a serious commitment to launching a line of green cars, dubbed Project I, in the very near term. The Simple concept featured here was built to test technologies that might find their way into the new line of electric BMWs before long.

BMW's advanced Technik team created the tandem Simple in order to achieve a 120 mpg fuel consumption target.

“It’s the only way to get such a low fuel economy,” says project leader Sebastian Schelper. He added, “We could build the Simple right now with the technology we have, but it is just a concept.”

You will not see the Simple on the roads, but the engineering learnings of the project have already been handed over to the Project I team. Mr. Schelper, in turn, has now been named head of sustainability for Project I.
