VIDEO: Ferrari 458 Italia driven

The introduction of any new Ferrari is a momentous occasion, and we all took notice when the 458 Italia was introduced a few months ago. The Italia replaces a massively popular car, the 430, meaning that it had to take a huge leap forward in performance and technology.

On that front, Ferrari does not disappoint. The 4.5L, direct-injected V8 produces 392 lb-ft of torque and 562 hp, a whopping 70 hp more than the 430. The transmission is a 7-speed dual clutch unit and sadly, no manual transmission, with that lovely, traditional Ferrari gated shifter will be available. Alas, such are the byproducts of advancement.

As Autocar journalist Jamie Corstorphine demonstrates, it is the mostly hidden aerodynamics of the Italia that truly link this Ferrari to what the company has learned from Formula 1 racing. Active, movable diffusers up front bend at high speeds in order to reduce drag, while at the back, subtle, hidden engine intakes do the same job that visible units used to do on the 430.

Putting everything aside, the noise is what most people care about. The Italia would make Pavarotti proud, so turn up your computer's volume and simply enjoy the music on this Friday afternoon.
