Chrysler sale to FIAT finally official!

After a back-and-forth soap opera that saw the Supreme Court blocking the deal, FIAT has officially taken over Chrysler today and immediately made management changes that mirror the Italian giant's own management structure.

FIAT CEO Sergio Marchionne, a Canada-trained lawyer who miraculously turned the company around, has appointed former Toyota marketing whiz Jim Press as his deputy CEO. More interestingly, Marchionne has appointed an executive to lead each of the remaining brands:

• Peter Fong, president and CEO of the Chrysler brand

• Michael Manley, president and CEO of Jeep

• Michael Accavitti, president and CEO of Dodge

• Pietro Gorlier, president and ...

EXCLUSIVE VIDEO: Interview with Todd Lassa, Detroit Editor, MotorTrend

We are a few weeks out from the end of the 2009 NY Auto Show, but we saved an in-depth, uninterrupted interview for those of you who think about the state of the US car industry night and day.  We caught up with Todd Lassa, Detroit Editor for MotorTrend, a dear friend to rightpedal, and one of the most respected automotive journalists in the country in order to discuss the state in which Detroit finds itself.

The car industry is acting like a hormone-crazed high schooler!

Given the downturn, it is inevitable to see major shifts in the center of power among the big corporations. But two recent pieces of news really demonstrate just how bizarre the car industry has become. Tell me I am not alone when I think that the below would make for one heck of a corporate thriller celebrity gossip rag, replete with courtships, breakups, back-stabbing and unpredictable behavior:

VW gets weak - Porsche buys VW - Porsche gets weak - VW ...

Uncle Mark shares his sentiments on FIATs

There is a reason I am in witness protection: last time I wrote for a blog, I inadvertently seriously upset an Italian. Despite what I thought was a very innocuous comment (don’t worry, it wasn’t about his mother, lovely woman, great pair of car horns), he took great offense, which put me off writing for a while…..

Anyway, after hearing about the ‘great’ Chrysler give-away (they jumped into bed with Fiat, clothes off and gave away the sugar within 30 seconds), I feel compelled to break my silence and am going to risk renewed abuse from all Italians ...

Speaking of FIAT...would you buy one of these?

I saw the new FIAT 500 in the flesh when it was introduced last year, and I have to say, it was very well-executed. Would you buy one if FIAT started selling them here? Leave your comments below. Our commenting system is easy, no login required.

Chrysler and FIAT in partnership talks

The big automotive news of the day was reports of Chrysler and FIAT discussing a partnership. Chrysler has been given a lifeline by our generous government (actually, a generous us) and is desperately trying to improve its chances of survival. Therefore, it is reaching for just about any deal it thinks it can make.

FIAT, of course, has had a good run of late. If nothing else, it is enjoying the iPod-to-Mac-like halo effect of its successful Fiat 500, itself inspired by the iconic original. The company also owns Alfa Romeo, which plans to return to the US market next ...
