VIDEO: Mercedes SLS Gullwing at Laguna Seca

After a short break, we're back with more automotive goodness. To make up for a slow week last week, let's start with a supercar video.
By now, you have started learning more about the new AMG SLS "Gullwing." International journalists and lucky Mercedes-benz owners were recently introduced to the car at Laguna Seca. The video here is from UK's Autocar and gives us a good idea of what the car is actually like to drive.
Based on what Matt Prior has to say, this is a focused, serious Mercedes that fits somewhere between the Aston Martin Vantage ...
VIDEO: Mercedes SLS Gullwing explodes its doors upon rollover

Ever wonder how you would get out of your $200,000 SLS Gullwing Benz should you roll it over and come to a rest on its roof? Worry no more, as undramatically illustrated in this video of an SLS crash test.
In order to comply with regulations that stipulate rescue teams needs to be able to open a car’s doors in the event of an accident, Mercedes-Benz has engineered explosive charges in the door hinges of the SLS that will release the doors in case a rollover takes place.
Beyond this point in the video, you will also see ...
VIDEO: Interview with Ron Dennis

Car recently sat down with McLaren Automotive Chairman Ron Dennis to discuss the recently-launched McLaren MP4-12C supercar, the future of the company, and even cows. Included below is a portion of the interview on video, with Dennis talking about the MP4-12C and what it represents for McLaren Automotive. The interview excerpts are reproduced here as found on car.com.
Ron Dennis on… why build the MP4-12C
‘It’s understandable why people ask the question “why now”, but the answer to that question lies in the statistics of F1. When I first entered F1 in 1966, there was only one other ...

VIDEO: Nissan GT-R meets its ancestor

Although the current Nissan GT-R does not make use of the storied 'Skyline' moniker, it is very much related to that line of cars that has become the stuff of legend. Many iterations of the Skyline led up to the current Godzilla, but it was the late, great R-34 that was most responsible for launching the car onto the international stage.
Officially, the R-34 had only 276 hp, but everyone knew that Nissan did not really abide by that Japanese manufacturers' gentlemen's agreement. The bullet-proof R-34 inline 6 engine was supposedly good for 330 hp out of the factory ...

Lexus, to be precise, but you get the point. These iPhone videos give you a glimpse of a production-ready Lexus LF-A supercar and better yet, a quick sense of just how great it will sound!
Details are still very sketchy - come on Lexus, put the car on the market already - but the rumor mill pegs the horsepower at around 550 and the price around $200,000.
UPDATE: we found a video of a journalist who has driven the car. We will let his gushing review in the second video below speak for itself.

McLaren launches interactive website for MP4-12C

If you are getting impatient as you await the arrival of your McLaren Mp4-12C supercar.....of your dreams in a car magazine, too bad. All of us are in the same boat as McLaren teases us with veiled information on its latest, most exquisite creation.
In order to acquiesce us mortals though, McLaren has just launched a rather neat interactive website that it says will be the only source of information on the MP4-12C until the car is launched in 2011.
"Until the car is physically presented in showrooms in early 2011, this website will be the only publicly-available source ...
VIDEO: Ferrari 458s unleashed on Mugello racetrack

Following the official world debut at the Frankfurt Auto Show, Ferrari continues to produce more mouth-watering content featuring its newest model, the 458 Italia.
As anyone with a beating heart knows, at least half of the magic of Ferrris is due to their engines, be they mostrous V12s or screaming V8s. The 458, with its spine-tingling engine note, does not disappoint, as you can attest to yourselves after watching the below video.
Just make sure your volume is turned all the way up and that no one is around to witness you weeping like a baby.

Production Lexus LF-A supercar spied

These pictures give us an almost final glimpse of what Lexus' upcoming LF-A supercar will look like. As we reported a few weeks ago, the LF-A is going to be Toyota's 550 hp answer to the seminal Nissan GT-R. No more than 500 LF-A's will be built during its production run, which is expected to last two to three years depending on the pace of sales.
Autocar brings us a few more details on the LF-A. The 5.0L V10 engine reportedly redlines at 9,000 rpm, providing for a power-to-weight ratio of 367 hp per ton. This ...
Audi goes electric with the R8 e-Tron

We recently reported on a new, viral Audi site dedicated to the company's focus on electric cars. As hinted on the site, electricityuntamed.com, Audi had been planning something big for the Frankfurt Auto Show, and here it is: the Audi R8 e-Tron concept car.
This fully-electric R8 concept packs an equivalent of 313 hp and a transmission-destroying 3,319 lb-ft of torque! This mighty amount of shove comes courtesy of four electric motors powered by a Li-ion battery pack. While 0-62 mph comes at a brisk 4.8 seconds, it is the 4.1 second dash from 37 ...
Lamborghini Reventon Roadster is one mean topless ride

File this one under 'ultra-exclusive'. Lamborghini has taken the wraps off of the 661 hp Reventon Roadster, of which fewer than 20 will be built. The Roadster's hard-top brother wowed the world with its stealth-fighter styling and jagged lines. The Roadster itself continues the tradition faithfully, as you can see in these stunning pictures.
487 lb-ft of torque combine with the massive gobs of horsepower for a 0-60 mph time of only 3.4 seconds. The Roadster is all-wheel-drive and can only be ordered with an e-gear semi-automatic six speed.
As for price, do you really need to ask ...

McLaren MP4-12C supercar revealed

Today is one supercar-heavy day. Along with former supercar partner Mercedes-Benz, McLaren has unveiled its newest supercar and the first built independently since the F1. The MP4-12C was designed by American Frank Stephenson, the man who designed the Mini, BMW X5 and Fiat 500 - an impressive resume indeed
Full details have not been released yet, but we understand that the new McLaren features a British-built 90 degree, 3.8L V8 good for 600 hp. As is the norm these days, the MP4-12C features a seven-speed dual clutch transmission built by Graziano. Of course, given McLaren's expertise in racecar construction ...
Mercedes-Benz reveals SLS AMG Gullwing supercar

The spiritual successor to the legendary 50's Gullwing Mercedes has been one of the worst-kept secrets in the car industry. However, we can now show you the first official pictures of the new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Gullwing.
The first car designed fully by Mercedes-Benz's AMG division, this new BEnz supercar features the workhorse 6.3L AMG V8. In the SLS, the V8 produces 563 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque. Mercedes-Benz's first seven-speed dual clutch transmission sends the power to the rear wheels.
The SLS is made mostly from carbon-fiber, allowing for a 0-60 mph dash of ...
Next Lambo Murciélago to be 'green'

British magazine AutoEXPRESS brings us these renderings of the next, all-new Lamborghini Murciélago. The current car is already one of the most appropriate bearers of the 'supercar' moniker, so the next Murci will have to be something special in order to continue the tradition of a species that Lamborghini created with the Miura. If the pictures are anything to go by, the new car will still stun with its aggressive beauty.
Not surprisingly, the next ultimate Lambo will draw heavily from parent Audi's technological know-how. This will include an aluminum spaceframe chassis and carbon-fiber body parts. The car ...
BREAKING: Gordon Murray to design final supercar

When the designer of what many consider as being the most amazing supercar of all time, the McLaren F1, says he will design one more supercar, you listen. Car reports that Gordon Murray, a certified genius, will design another supercar that is even more radical than the F1. Murray hopes to start work on his final supercar after having sold several iStream licenses. iStream is the technology Murray has pioneered as a more efficient way of bulding cars, including his T25 city cars.
Murray insists that he will not pursue outright horsepower and speed with his next supercar, goal posts ...
VIDEO: 1100 hp Heffner Lamborghini Murcielago

If you thought Germany was the only country home to mad tuning houses, think again. The folks at Sarasota, FL-based Heffner Performance are certified, which is the best compliment a car guy can pay another group of car nuts. What you see here is a twin-turbo, 100 hp Lamborghini Murcielago created by Heffner.
One of the most amazing details of the car is that the monstrous amount of horsepower is put down via only the rear wheels, even though Lamborghini insists on four-wheel drive for most Murcielagos.
You can hear the car’s astounding engine sounds in the first video ...
VIDEO: 550 hp, V10 Lexus LF-A at the Nürburgring
A couple of days ago, my Nissan GT-R video post started a heated bench-racing discussion between me and two loyal rightpedal readers. The discussion centered around how the Lexus LF-A would stack up against the Nissan GT-R when it finally makes it through its long gestation period and onto the market.
Nissan and Toyota could not have adopted more different approaches: twin-turbo 480 hp V6 for the Nissan in a body built with fairly conventional materials, versus a 550 hp naturally-aspirated V10 built placed in an aluminum/carbon fiber-heavy body for the Lexus. One of the readers insisted that the ...
VIDEO: What’s the most economical supercar?
In the pure interest of science, the selfless blokes at TopGear undertook an exercise last season that is worth showing again. They set out to see which supercar among five – Lamborghini Muercielago, Aston Martin DBS, McLaren SLR, Audi R8, and Ferrari 599 – would go farthest on just one gallon of fuel while racing around a track.
Lest they be accused of elitism, they did not stop there. In the second half of the video, they decide to see how a BMW M3 sedan fares against a Toyota Prius in a fuel-efficiency test conducted at the Prius’ top speed. Think you ...
VIDEO: Random GT-R goodie to serve an obsession
Admittedly, I tend to get obsessive about certain things in life. It was an obsession with cars that led me to get out of pre-med studies in order to become an automotive engineer, and it was that same obsession that led me to start rightpedal.
Of late, I have had another obsession: the Nissan GT-R. Ever since seeing one at a Cars & Coffee event in Las Vegas two months ago, I have wanted one so badly it hurts. In fact, I took a picture of said GT-R on my iPhone and unbeknownst to the owner, the dude’s car now ...
VIDEO: mad, guttural Veritas RS3 is like no other car
If you can get past its $405,000 price tag, which is a bit absurd, this unique car is truly something to behold. The Veritas RS3 is handmade in Germany using Kevlar and carbon fiber body parts and is powered by a 473 hp version of the BMW M3’s V8 (it can also be ordered with the M5’s V10). The name is drawn from a 1930s racing team that raced BMW-based cars.
The RS3 has no ABS, traction control, or even wind screen. The tradeoff, however, is a weight of just over 2200 lb, which only means the ...
VIDEO: Noble M600 supercar battles for Britain
In a day and age when most historic English car companies are owned by foreign entities, sports car manufacturer Noble is one of the only companies defending the national industry’s honor. With the launch of the Noble M600, Noble intends to take the fight to the world’s most exclusive supercars.
The most fascinating thing about this car is not that it has mega-horsepower, but that its powerplant is Volvo-based. The engine is ...

Not content with winning over the hearts of swooning car fans and auto journalists alike with even its 'base' V8 model R8, Audi has been caught testing a hardcore, lightweight track-oriented version of its R8 V10 at the Nürburgring, where all great cars are born. Although it is too early to say, this new R8 will likely carry the "Clubsport" moniker. Visual clues of its special mission are the fixed wing a la the TT RS, spoiler blades up front as well as the heavy-duty diffuser out back. Old-school racing hood latches complete the track-biased effect.
Audi, who owns ...
Suzuki pins hopes on all-new Kizashi

Suzuki makes great motorcycles - everyone knows that. However, their car business has never quite measured up to their two-wheel business. Yes, the Grand Vitara has sold decently well, but it is not a breakout product.
Now, Suzuki has unveiled a car that it hopes will change things and move the company upscale. Behold the Suzuki Kizashi. Details are still scant, but we know that the Kizashi will be available with the following:
- 2.4L 4-cylinder engine
- approximately 200 hp
- approximately 180 lb-ft of torque
- all wheel drive (switchable to FWD)
- 6 speed manual or CVT transmission
- sports tuned
- 425-watt Rockford ...
VIDEO: Mercedes-McLaren SLR Stirling Moss on test track
The Mercedes-McLaren SLR Stirling Moss edition is the last iteration of the exotic joint venture between the German giant and the racing powerhouse. After this, McLaren will build its own cars independently while Mercedes-Benz will imminently unveil its new supercar, the SLS Gullwing.
In the meantime, you can enjoy watching the Stirling Moss edition being driven around a test track by Mercedes-Benz DTM driver Bruno Spengler. Needless to say, this car celebrates the legendary 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Mille Miglia race car in which Stirling Moss set his still-unbroken record (historic video below). Only 75 of these $1.01M, 650 ...
VIDEO: Lamborghini Murciélago LP 670-4 SV
What, ANOTHER review of the last Murciélago? We featured the TopGear video of the 670 hp monster last week. However, I am so saddened by the imminent retirement of this beast that I am scouring the intertubes for any video of it I can get my eyeballs on.
In case you do not know, the engine in the Murciélago is related to the very first V12 Lambo used in the iconic Miura back in the 60's, but it is almost certain that with the departure of the Murciélago, this historic engine block will die too, to ...
VIDEO: Evil GTbyCitroën engine noise
You will recall the pictures of the outlandish GTbyCitroën supercar that we brought you several weeks ago. Since then, Citroën has announced that it will build a limited number of the car. Since the company does not have any supercar-worthy engines in its arsenal, it will have to borrow one from someone else, and the rumor mill suggests the engine will be an American V8.
In this video, you will hear the engine at near-idle speeds. It does indeed sound like an old-school American V8 and makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. If ...
VIDEO: Corvette ZR-1 drag races Porsche GT2
British magazine Autocar has heroically set out to determine whether the Corvette ZR-1 can beat its German rival the Porsche GT2 in a drag race. The Porsche has that characteristic traction advantage derived from its rear-engine placement, which means the engine weight literally pushes the tires into the asphalt. However, the ZR-1 has a much larger engine and more than 100 lb-ft of extra torque on its side. The results, well, speak for themselves.

VIDEO: Lotus Evora seriously impresses all comers
It has been a long time coming, but Lotus has finally brought a brilliant new car to the market. The famed English company, known for making some of the best-handling cars in the world, relied too heavily on its Elise and Elise-derived Exige models over the last 15 years. Those cars have been extremely popular with hard-core drivers but were never the most comfortable and practical rides around.
Enter the Lotus Evora, a Toyota Camry engine-powered 2+2 machine that in my opinion will propel Lotus to new heights in this market....unless the $85,000 price tag turns people ...
VIDEO: Mercedes proves more is less with SL65 AMG Black
We all know that of late, Mercedes-Benz has been very good at creating obscenely powerful engines that outdo its own....obscenely powerful engines. However, more power and torque do not always translate to superior performance.
Every once in a while, Mercedes seems to get it right, as is the case with the C63 AMG. However, as Jeremy Clarkson finds out in this review of the ultra-rare Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG Black Series, the Stuttgart giant has a long way to go to learn about finesse when it comes to ueber-performance cars. However, if you still want one, you will be ...
Swiss tuner unveils 858hp 911!

Does the world really need yet another tuned Porsche 911? Well, if the tuner in question does ridiculous things like creating an 858hp Porsche 911, then yes!
Behold the Sportec T80, a twin-turbo, 3.6L flat six 911 that produces 858hp and accelerates to 62mph in 3.0 seconds on its way to a top speed of 236 mph.
If those figures are not enough to make your head turn, here are some more: the T80 has a power-to-weight ratio of 637hp per ton. The Lamborghini Murcielago, a benchmark supercar, manages a wussy 352h per ton. Ready for more? The ...
VIDEO: Lamborghini Murciélago LP 670-4 SV in the desert
This headline should read 'video of Lamborghini Murciélago LP 670-4 SV makes grown man weep from envy.' The grown man would be, well, me. And the video would be by none other than those damn lucky Brits at the BBC.
I serve at your pleasure, so far be it from me not to shamelessly share with you another pirated clip of TopGear that had my heart racing earlier today. Watch Hammond wring out the last in line of the glorious Murciélago line that will be replaced by what is surely to be a capable, modern but less outrageous ...

Sensational GTbyCitroën supercar may actually be built

Once upon a time, Citroën was the most innovative car company on earth. But that was a long time ago. Over the past few decades, Citroën has been relegated to making mostly generic small cars with none of the bravado that used to make the marque stand out.
This is precisely why the news of the GTbyCitroën, a supercar that was previously just a virtual car made for the computer game Gran Tourismo 5, driving around the streets of London is so remarkable. When was the last time you heard the words Citroën and supercar uttered ...

That's not all. The famous incognito test driver, The Stig, is finally revealed tonight....or is he? Watch the next two videos, which along with the above, are from Season 13 of TopGear.

Supercar maker Koenigsegg takes over Saab

GM has announced Swedish manufacturer of outlandish supercars, Koenigsegg, as the top bidder for Saab. Along with Norwegian investors, Koenigsegg will be receiving from GM $500 million in assets and cash, plus production equipment for a new Saab model as well as $150 million of cash already in Saab's account.
As far as automotive acquisitions go, this one is actually interesting. Saab has always been known for its quirky approach to car-making, a reputation that has perhaps been blunted by years of indifferent ownership by GM. While running a car company is an incredibly capital-intensive affair, worse things could ...

The car was unveiled at the Shanghai Auto Show and although we are not there to see this beast in the flesh, something tells us it is the showstopper.

McLaren F1 supercar will return

It is well-known that McLaren has been working on the P11, a future rival to the Ferrari 430 and Lamborghini Gallardo. Now, Autocar’s sources at McLaren have informed the magazine that McLaren has started work on a new version of the now-legendary McLaren F1 supercar.
Word has it that McLaren has reached an agreement with Mercedes-Benz to supply engines for both the P11 and the new F1. Only time will tell whether a Merc-engined F1 supercar will be as special as the BMW-powered original that took the car world by storm.

Owning a car company can be deadly

Note to self: do not be a Russian oligarch (or at least don't live in Russia if you are one). Alexander Antonov, the Russian billionaire owner of Dutch supercar company Spyker, has survived an assassination attempt outside his Moscow home. Antonov, whose net worth is estimated at $3.5B, has survived five bullets in his stomach, one in his chest, and one that caused him to lose a part of a finger. Fortunately, he is said to be in stable condition. The assassins are still at large.

This is a republished post I recently wrote for Columbia Business School's blog, Public Offering.
Believe it or not, engineers have emotions just like everyone else. I know this because I used to be one — in the car industry, at that. Before going to Columbia Business School, I spent seven years working at Ricardo, one of the world’s leading automotive engineering and management consultancies. After graduation, I founded rightpedal, an automotive social media site for Generation Y. While it is difficult to say what makes an engineer tick, one thing is true of the people who make the ...
A rare look into the secret world of supercar design
At rightpedal, we are a big fan of Jason Castriota’s. The young Italian-American born right here in New York state has left an indelible mark on the design world with such unforgettable beauties as the Maserati Birdcage 75 concept car, the one-off Ferrari P4/5, the Maserati Gran Tourismo and the Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano.
Castriota, who previously worked at Pininfarina, was recently named the Design Director at Stile Bertone, another legendary Italian design firm responsible for historic cars such as the Lamborghinis Miura and Countach. The video here is part one of a documentary series called Inside Project ...
Stunning Lamborghini Insecta has us swooning

The simply irresistible, achingly-beautiful car you see here is the Lamborghini Insecta, the work of a freelance Romanian designer named Iulian Bumbu. As the name of the concept suggest, Bumbu took his inspiration from the exoskeleton of insects for what he calls an organic shape.
Do you all agree that Lamborghini should buy the design and build it exactly as is (except, in the name of all holy cows, NOT in Barney purple)? We certainly do. The Insecta has been built around a Gallardo chassis and mechanicals, so making it a reality is not that far a stretch.
We will ...

BMW to launch a green supercar
